Well never fear we are attempting to make a comeback. In the passing days I have cut back on the bettas and downsized to the two larger tanks. The largest (30gal) houses the last remaining betta, a guppie, two plecos, and three neon tetras. The second houses the newest member pictured above.

Meet Munya,

Munya is a Dragon Gobie and is roughly 7-8 inches long. Dragon Gobies are brackish water fish originating from South and Central America. He can grow to be 2 feet with the right maintenance and care. They are pretty timid and get along with most fish. But they will eat anything little like a guppies or a neon (hopefully he will eat that minnow we caught for food a year back).

Im working on getting a large amount of plants for both tanks and a new heater for Munyas. Dragon Gobies like plenty of hiding places and prefer warmer brackish water. This tank will not be his permanent tank, I will upgrade as he grows. Its preferred that he lives in a 50 gallon or more.

Photo

scientificillustration:

We had to take our puffer fish back to the store because it needs brackish water and our tank is fresh. However, I got to bring this little guy home instead! Ain’t he cute? This is a freshwater eel-fish, which can get up to 20 inches long. I’ve named him Unagi (suggested by missusagi) which is Japanese for “freshwater eel,” but more importantly is the name of the sea serpent from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Here’s a short video of Unagi-chan in his new home!

I half a male halfmoon betta in a 2.5 gallon tank. I know the males can be community fish as long as they are the only betta and aggressive fish. Do you think that I could have another couple small fish in that tank with him (size wise). If so, what kind would you recommend? He just seems a little lonely. I swear this fish has manners, he's such a sweetie! Thank you for your time and help!

It is very possible to have a male betta with smaller fish. Just as long as they are not small enough to fit in his mouth, fish get the “is this edible” thought just like lets say small children. As for what kinds of fish theres a good handful of them ranging different sizes.

Guppies

cory cats

dinnos

Hatchets

loaches

teras

rasboras

mollies

catfish

plecos

- and those are the only ones that i can think of at the moment. Putting a betta in a community tank should have very little problems if none. Just makes sure theres plenty of space and hiding places for all the fish. That way if there are problems whoever is being bullied can easily get away from the bully.

I have guppies and tetras in my tank with a female who is aggressive but has no problem with fish of other breeds/species. my other two females live with a pesky little minnow two plecos and a clawed frog (the minnow was meant to be a snack for the frog…)

I recently purchased a betta and everything is going perfectly fine with him, minus one small detail. His tank is really really cloudy even though I clean it weekly. I do about 30 - 50 % water change each time. I also have water conditioner I use after changing the water. I was wondering if you knew what the problem could be?

My ant had a similar problem with a 20 gallon for some angels. But it could be a series of issues which are all easy to fix.

1. If it happens quickly when you put the water in the gravel might have a residue in it that gets stirred up. Take your little fella out and rinse out the gravel until it runs clear. if this doesnt work then-

2. Test your water to make sure the ph isnt high when you put it in the tank. This and cloudy water may be because of something dissolving in your tank (maybe a decoration of some sort) leaving behind phosphates, heavy metals, or silicates. In this case usually water conditioners should fix the problem but seeing as you use them then theres part-

3. Bacteria bloom has welcomed itself to your tank. It can take a series of days, weeks, and sometimes months for this to happen but either way it isn’t causing any harm. New tanks take time to form bacterial colonies (which every tank has no one freak out these little guys are meant to be there) that are able to clear waste from the tank. Overtime the cloudiness will resolve itself. Just continue cleaning, water changes, and ensuring that not to much food or plant debris is left behind.

Don't goldfish grow to their surroundings? And I meant that they have the markings that look like one. xD They're so cute. And I plan on getting another tank for them, so they can grow and I can put something else in their tank. c:

Most fish do, but that really depends on the fish. Thats why most the time iIsay “they grow in the right conditions”. Now i don’t know much about a goldfish’s growth rate and what constitutes healthy growth in a tank for them. But I know with plecos, the cleaner the tank the faster they grow. A clean tank simulates open water in a sense, because lets face it in a pond or river its a constant circulation of water and more space for filth to go. I can picture this being the same for a good amount of fish out there.

Ive never personally owned a goldie (by first fish was a african cichlid) but have a few friends that do. My friends fallows you when you pass the tank and you cant help but laugh a little. They all seem to have their own little personalities. Id own a goldie but the only empty tank I have is a betta 2.5 gal, and my 20 has two female bettas, two plecos, and a clawed frog whos not fond of new guest. The 30 is out of the picture because its a community tank and goldies view little fish as yummy snacks

Its always good to get new tanks for fish when they grow and for them to grow :). I love to hear when people are pumped to upgrade tanks for their fish!

I only own two gold fish, but they're prospering and starting to look like koi fish as of now.

Well, it seems you either have one of these-

Which is infact a gold fish and get a decent size (basicaly just a common goldfish unless its a comet which has a bit longer tail)

Or by some odd mix up or mis-identifacation you purchased koi..Which I would brace myself if I were you because koi can grow pretty fast in the right conditions. Thus why they are normally kept as pond fish rather than a tank fish.

No matter im sure you just have common goldfish who will grow a bit in size but nothing that of some large koi.

Which also means ive had little time to take care of my own tanks let alone the Marine Menagerie. But never threat! tomorrow is exclusively a tank cleaning and fish care. My 30 gallon, while I was gone for a week, has managed to grow an abnormal amount of algea and other growth. SO I will be going into the filter and scrubbing/processing everything. Once cleaned I plan on moving my larger pleco (mokof) over to the 30 from the 20 who can hopefully help maintain the house. To go with that my friends who I stayed with knew I had to come home with some sort of present for my tank so two new rocks and some drift wood will be added!

It’s been a little over a month, so here’s another tank photo from today. Unfortunately it’s not much different from last time - the wisteria really hasn’t been growing very well since I cut it back, which is disappointing. After removing and replanting a bunch of leaves from that big plant in the middle, it got weirdly spread out and now the middle of the tank looks strangely empty. It did send up a bunch of new leaves, though, and the replanted ones are doing pretty well. It just needs more time, I guess. I think I might take some of the red wendtii and one or two of the other smaller plants and replant them to fill up some of the space in the middle/back of the tank where nothing is growing. Always a work in progress with this thing. At least my fish are fine with it!

Day 3

Inhabitants
Halfmoon betta

Procedure
Filled completely with water, dosed with Seachem Flourish fertilizer. Installed an Aqueon Deluxe full hood, and an Aqueon Floramax fluorescent light fixture. Temporarily keeping the Exo-Terra Sun Glo reptile daylight spectrum lamp for better and faster establishment. Covered with a towel so I can sleep. Spent about $100 in total, and still need to get a really expensive external filter. From now on I will add a few more inhabitants but mostly just track the plant growth.
